Our Calling: To Be Good Stewards

We are to be good stewards with what God has given us.

“What do you have that you did not receive?” –1Cor 4:7 (NKJV)

It makes no difference whether the resource(s) God has given you is time, a gift (talent), or financial. God wants us to manage and use the resources He has given us by investing in His Kingdom.

We are to be good stewards with our finances.

I feel the need to focus on how God wants us to manage His finances. It seems to be an important and appropriate issue to discuss because Jesus spent more time teaching about money than anything else. After all,

“where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” —Matt 6:21

One can tell a lot about a person spiritually by observing where they invest their money. For example, our country puts a lot of value in the entertainment industry, which is why actors/actresses and athletes are among the highest paid professionals in the United States.

But, our financial priorities must be on serving the will of our Heavenly Father, and not on serving the needs of our “fleshly” desires. Because each of us will need to give an account of how we used the resources we have been given, which we can observe in the "Parable of the Ten Minas" in Luke 19:11-27.

“No servant can serve two masters;... You cannot serve God and wealth.” —Luke 16:13

A good steward has correct financial priorities for their Christian home based business.

Here are a few guidelines for managing your finances and being a good steward with a home based business:

  • Keep a budget.
  • “So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” —Luke 16:11 (NIV)

Know where God’s money is going. Keep your business expenses separate from your personal expenses, and be organized. Balance that checkbook!

  • Keep out of needless debt.
  • Proverbs 22:7 says, “The rich rules over the poor, And the borrower is servant to the lender.” (NKJV)

Sometimes to start a business you need borrow money, and this is why starting a home based business is so attractive. Because usually starting a home based business costs significantly less than a traditional “brick and mortar” business.

However, one should never borrow money to keep their home business afloat, to buy more inventory or products, or to pay for business expenses. Work within your budget.

  • Pay the bills and your taxes.
  • “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do so.” —Prov 3:27 (NKJV)
  • Give God his portion. (Tithing)
  • We again must use our home business to invest in the Kingdom of God. This is actually very exciting because the issue of tithing is the only time God actually tells us to test Him.

“Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! Buy you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, even this whole nation. ‘Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.” —Malachi 3:8-11

This is very exciting! Trust in the Lord to provide for your needs because there is no way that you can possibly bless others more than He can bless you!

Here are a couple of suggestions to be good stewards and invest in God's Kingdom with your business finances. Prayerfully consider:

  • Sponsoring a child
  • to provide an education, meal, uniforms, medical care, and hope with the presentation of the Gospel. Only $28.00 a month and 100% of your donation goes to your child.
  • Sponsoring a missionary
  • in the 10/40 window. For $30.00 a month you would be supporting a native missionaries financial needs (i.e. ministry and family needs), so he can concentrate on bringing the Gospel to the people. 100% of your tax-deductible donation goes to the missionary.
